After being promoted to the big league club last Thursday from the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox, former Sea Dogs Deven Marrero and Jonathan Aro both saw action on Sunday afternoon against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. The appearance marked the major league debut for Marrero, while Aro pitched 1/3 innings of relief in his second appearance for the big league club.

Marrero pinch-hit for first baseman Mike Napoli, who was ejected for dropping his bat after a called third strike by home plate umpire Tripp Gibson III in the top of the second inning. Brock Holt slid over from second base to first, with Marrero coming in and taking over second base duties.

The 24-year old Miami, Florida native went 0-3 with two strikeouts in his major league debut, but came up big in the eighth inning with a spectacular defensive play to save a run and preserve Boston’s two-run lead.

Marrero was drafted by the Red Sox in the first round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Arizona State University and had spent the beginning of this season in Pawtucket where he hit .241/.300/.345 with four home runs and 21 RBIs in 66 games. He spent parts of the 2013-2014 seasons with the Portland Sea Dogs and owned a .279/.361/.391 line with five home runs and 44 RBIs over 87 games.

Jonathan Aro made his major league debut against the Baltimore Orioles after being called up last Thursday, pitching 1 1/3 innings while allowing four hits and a run on two strikeouts and no walks. After Justin Masterson and Alexi Ogando pitched the first six innings on Sunday against the Rays, Aro was summoned to pitch the seventh, but struggled to get through 1/3 of an inning allowing two runs on two hits.

24-year old Aro is a native of the Dominican Republic, and was signed by the Red Sox as a non-drafted free agent in June of 2011. He began the year with the Sea Dogs and went 3-2 with a 2.82 ERA and 19 strikeouts over 8 games before being promoted to Triple-A last month.
