Per Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell, Henry Owens has been promoted to the majors and will make his first start on Tuesday against the New York Yankees in Yankee Stadium. Owens was ranked the 47th prospect in all of baseball when Baseball America released their mid-season rankings last month.

The 23-year old Owens has made 21 starts for the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox this season, posting a 3-8 record with a 3.16 ERA and 1.14 WHIP to go with 103 strikeouts in 122 1/3 innings.

After starting off the season with command issues, Owens has rebounded nicely lasting at least six innings in each of his last nine starts for the PawSox. During that stretch he has held hitters to a .185/.238/.284 slash line, while batters are only hitting .191 against Owens on the season as a whole.

“I was too analytical with my mechanics, my delivery,” Owens told MassLive.com of his early season struggles.

“Instead of making minor adjustments, I was making drastic adjustments pitch to pitch. It was kind of a domino effect. I would falter with one hitter and it would lead to the next three. Now, I’ve been able to make an adjustment on the fly.”

Owens spent parts of the 2013-2014 seasons with the Portland Sea Dogs where he owned a 17-5 record alongside a 2.44 ERA and 1.12 WHIP while striking out 172 in 151 1/3 innings.

His 2014 campaign earned him Eastern League Pitcher of the Year honors when he went 14-4 with a 2.60 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and struck out 126 in 121 innings.

The Boston Red Sox selected Owens in the first round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Edison High School in Huntington Beach, California. He was voted a MiLB.com Organizational All-Star in 2012 and 2013, a mid-season All-Star in 2013, a mid and postseason All-Star in 2014 and was named to the MLB Futures Game and selected to the Baseball America Minor League All-Star team that same season.
